Manage staff graded components#

Open edX offers some tools to grade learners’ submissions and provide them with grades and feedback. These components are highly demanded by course authors and are great resources to improve the learner’s learning process.

Open response assessments#

ORAs or Open response assessment components allow learners to submit essay-type responses and get them graded by classmates, instructors, or even themselves. The Open response assessment component can be configured to follow a series of steps as well as to simplify the process with one or two steps; this depends on the way the instructor wants to deliver the activity.

Understanding an Open Response Assessment#

Open Response Assessments are powerful but complex components that require understanding how they work and the possibilities they offer before implement them in an Open edX course. With a friendly interface, ORAs can help authors to configure these components to create unique assessments that can significantly improve the user experience as well as the assessment quality of the course.

Managing a running Open Response Assessment#

Once the Open response assessment is published, released, and functioning in a live course, authors should monitor the responses and provide the corresponding grades when the component is configured with a staff assessment step.

They will also have some options to manage specific situations with the submissions and grades of an ORA component.

Metrics of an Open Response Assessment#

After the ORA is published, authors can find different ways to retrieve data from the learners’ submissions; this helps them monitor and control the learners’ interactions with the assessment.

Staff graded assignment or SGA X-block#

Staff graded assignment or SGA x-block is a component that permits learners to upload a file. Instructors can assess those files later and provide a grade and feedback.

Managing an SGA x-block#

If the course you are running makes use of the SGA component, once learners start submitting their files, instructors can see, download and assess the files using the “grade submissions” option under the component on the LMS site. Instructors will see the following information.

-Username. -Name. -Filename. -Uploaded. Date when the file was uploaded. -Submitted: yes or no, depending if the file was uploaded. -Grade. -Instructor’s comments. -Annotated: File uploaded by the instructor as feedback. -Actions.

Note

Course team members that have the staff role can grade the submissions but will need approval from a course administrator to complete the grading process.

Staff graded points#

The Open edX Juniper version brought an interesting and promising tool for authors to assess external activities and participation called Staff graded points. This component had been highly demanded by authors to accept and assess activities their users performed on external platforms without needing any type of integration. Also, it was requested for assessing learners’ participation.

If the course you are running includes this component, you will be able to upload learner grades in bulk during the operation of the course.
