Manage discussions#
Forum discussions are essential in an Open edX course to allow learners to interact with their classmates. Once you have set up and launched your course, and if your course has discussion components, you might need to implement ways to manage them.
Discussion moderating roles#
To manage a discussion in an Open edX course, the user needs to be granted a specif role. This process is done by a course admin from the LMS instructor dashboard, in the “Membership” tab.

Course discussion moderators are responsible for keeping the interaction of learners in the forums under the politics established by the course creators and administrators as well as for ensuring learners use the tool to boost their learning process.

Discussions divided by cohorts-Content specific discussions#
Sometimes authors require to restrict the discussion components to a specific group of learners depending on the course content and learning-oriented objectives of the course. In this scenario, Open edX offers the cohorts functionality to accomplish this goal.

Team discussions#
